U of I Graduate and undergraduate students eligible for CLACS prizes
The Center proudly announces its first annual competition for the Undergraduate Research Paper Prize and the Graduate Research Paper Prize in Latin American and Caribbean Studies for the Academic Year 2007-2008. Application deadline is April 15, 2008.
Third Annual Midwest Workshop on Latin American History

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, with co-sponsorship by the Department of History, is hosting the third Midwest Workshop on Latin American History, after prior workshops at the University of Chicago (2005) and Notre Dame University (2006).
The workshop provides a congenial, informal space for presentation of cutting-edge scholarship and frank discussions of papers and conceptual debates in our field. At this year’s workshop, 17 papers will be presented by professors and advanced graduate students from Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana and Illinois on topics ranging from indigenous labor exploitation and family cohesion in colonial Guatemala and Mexican environmental policies during the 1930s, to the impact of US imperialism from Panama to Chile and human rights and the memory of genocide in Brazil and Guatemala. A round-table discussion on the future of Latin American ethnohistory among respected practicioners of the field will be a focal point of the workshop.

LAST instructors ranked as excellent by students
The spring 2007 ICES 'Incomplete List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students' has been published, listing LAST TAs Luis Eduardo Herrera, who received outstanding ratings, and Ryan Jones, as well as Quechua Instructor Clodoaldo Soto. Latin American Film Festival to feature award-winning movies
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Five recently released films from five countries in Latin America will be featured in the Latin American Film Festival, scheduled from Feb. 23 to March 1, 2007. The first of its kind in Central Illinois, the film festival is organized by the U. of I.’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies with the generous support and collaboration of the Boardman’s Art Theatre in Champaign, the U. of I.'s Department of Spanish, Italian & Portuguese, and additional departments at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. High hopes for next president of Ecuador
Income distribution main concern during Correa's studies at UI
Ecuador is set for a fresh start on Jan. 15, 2007, when newly elected President Rafael Correa will begin his mandate. Hoping to redistribute the country’s oil wealth, Correa is an economist who solidified his ideas during his Ph.D. studies at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. (read more)

Spanish Time at Public Libraries
Daily Illini: CHILDREN LEARN LATINO CULTURE THROUGH STORIES
The substantial growth of the Latino population in the United States in recent years has provided added cultural significance to programs such as Spanish Story Time at the Urbana Free Library that offer exposure to the Spanish language and Latin American cultures.
The event, founded last year, returned this past week after a summer hiatus. (read more)
