Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship
FLAS Fellowships for Academic Year 2010–2011 and Summer 2010
2010-2011 FLAS Fellowship CalendarFLAS Fellowships are administered by the University of Illinois National Resource Centers and are awarded competitively through an annual competition. Students from all departments and professional schools are encouraged to apply.
CLACS FLAS fellowships may be used for the study of Quechua, or another Amerindian language, or Brazilian Portuguese. Priority is given to the study of less commonly taught languages. Under exceptional circumstances, advanced (or third-year) Spanish study may be allowed.
FLAS information Workshops
The workshop will feature information on FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Fellowships with presentations by the Area and International Centers FLAS coordinators: tips on how to write a successful application; what supporting documents you need; who is appropriate for a recommendation.

The application deadline is Friday Feb. 12, 2010, but try to hand materials to your department at least a couple of weeks prior to the deadline.
Please read the submission andapplication instructions carefully and make sure you have gathered all the information you need before beginning the online application, because once you begin the application you must complete and submit it in one session. You will not be able to save your work or start over.
Academic Year 2010–2011: CLACS has academic-year FLAS fellowships to award for 2010-2011 to qualified graduate and undergraduate students.
Graduate students: The awards receive full tuition, mandatory fees and a stipend of $15,000 payable over the academic year.
Undergraduate students:
receive $10,000 towards tuition and fees and a stipend of $5,000.
Summer 2010: The awards carry a stipend of $2,500 plus tuition and fees of $4,000. Students desiring to study overseas are advised to confer with the CLACS FLAS coordinator early in the planning process. Students should also check for other sources of funding. Many of these have earlier application dates.
ELIGIBILITY:
• U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
• Currently enrolled as a graduate student OR applying for graduate admission.
• Current or former FLAS fellows may apply; priority is given to applicants for a first or second FLAS.
• Applicants are ineligible for support to study a language of which they are a native speaker.
• Graduate students may carry no more than 25% time assistantship while holding a CLACS FLAS fellowship.
• Undergraduate students must have a 3.0 GPA and currently enrolled in at least the second year od language study.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
• Applicants are judged on their record of academic achievement.
• Demonstrated and proposed commitment to CLACS language and area studies. In the one-page, single-spaced statement of purpose for the proposed study program, describe how the study of your chosen language contributes to your goals in graduate studies and in your career.
