FALL 2017 Call for Proposals

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies invites proposals for its Spring 2017 Faculty Research Grants competition, funded with a Title VI NRC grant from the U.S. Department of Education. As technology, population movement, and economic change bring us closer together, awareness of cultural differences becomes vital for success in today’s globalized marketplace. Since Latin America continues to be a key area of national, economic, political, and cultural importance, exposing students to the languages, cultures, histories, and politics of the region helps them become better informed global citizens and more competitive in the job and academic markets.

The purpose of the Faculty Research Grants is to support research and curriculum development which strengthens our understanding of Latin America. Awards of up to $2,000 can be used to pay for travel, the purchase of classroom materials (books, films, teaching collections), etc. (contact szremski@illinois.edu for questions about allowable expenses).

Guidelines. To apply, please submit the following:
• Coversheet: Please complete the attached Spring 2017 CLACS Research Grant COVER SHEET
• Project Narrative: Two-page statement about the purpose of the trip and details about major planned activities while abroad;
• Abstract of the narrative, no longer than 300 characters (required by US ED);
• Publications: List of major publications/ creative activities during the past 3 years;
• Budget: the budget should include detailed breakdown of the expenses (e.g. airfare, gas mileage, lodging, materials to be purchased, etc.). If travel is involved, a detailed itinerary with precise dates, air carrier(s) and flight numbers is required (US ED requirement). International travel must be approved 30 days prior to departure and comply with the Fly America Act (US ED requirement).
• Application materials should be combined into a single PDF and submitted via email to szremski@illinois.edu. Please include your last name and Faculty Research Grant in the subject line.
• Applications due Friday, September 15th (now extended to Friday, September 22)

Successful applicants will be notified of their awards by September 22nd and funds must be spent by August 14th, 2018. Failure to use funds by this date may result in the loss of award. Grantees are also expected to write a brief post-report (1 page) on how the grant impacted their research and/or teaching.

Note: U.S. Department of Education Title VI Grant funds may be used to pay for airfare, gas mileage, lodging, and the purchase of class room materials (i.e. books, films, teaching collections, etc.). Food and alcohol are NOT allowable expenses, nor are salaries. All international travel must comply with the Fly America Act. Failure to comply may result in the loss of grant funds

Faculty Research Grant

The Faculty Travel Awards are intended to support faculty travel overseas for short-term trips to explore or expand promising new lines of research. Travel must be for a minimum of 10 days. Travel supported by Title VI NRC funds must be on US carriers and the itineraries must be approved by the U.S. Department of Education before the start of the travel. Awards of up to $2,000 for travel expenses.

Notice: Funds from the NRC grant cannot be used for food, alcoholic beverages, entertainment, or salary. Funds need to be used before August 14, 2017.

Applications should include:

  • 1)Two-page statement about the purpose of the trip and details about major planned activities while abroad;

Faculty Course Development Grant

The Course Development Awards are intended to support faculty developing new courses on Latin America. Courses from any discipline are welcome, although courses likely to contribute to the core of an interdisciplinary Latin American Studies curriculum are especially encouraged.  Courses likely to be taught regularly will also be given priority. New Study Abroad Courses are included.  Awards of up to $2,000 can support travel/lodging, the purchase of potential course materials, photocopying, or similar costs related to the development of the course.

Notice: Funds from the NRC grant cannot be used for food, alcoholic beverages, entertainment, or salary. Funds need to be used before August 14, 2017.

Applications should include:

  • 1) Title of course, home department, and name of instructor;
  • 2) A statement of no more than 5 pages describing the course, including a discussion of its likely contributions to the curriculum in the home department and to an interdisciplinary curriculum in Latin American Studies, and an indication of when the course would be first offered and how regularly it will be taught;

  • 3) Abstract of this statement, no longer than 300 characters (required by US ED);
  • 4) List of major publications/ creative activities during the past 5 years;

  • 5) A timetable of activities related to the development of the course,

  • 6) Detailed budget listing anticipated costs;

Other Faculty Research-related Activity

Examples:

 

  • A- Buying books for the University Library to expand offerings connected to a course.
  • B-Inviting a visiting scholar to campus. If travel is from Latin America, travel must be for a minimum of 10 days. Travel supported by Title VI NRC funds must be on US carriers and the itineraries must be approved by the U.S. Department of Education before the start of the travel. Awards of up to $2,000 for travel expenses. [Also include requirements required for Faculty Travel in the application.]
  • C-Funding for expenses connected to a Conference/Workshop/Symposium.

External Faculty Curriculum Development Grants

Spring 2017 Call for Proposals

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies invites proposals for its Spring 2017 Faculty Curriculum Development Grants competition for non-UIUC faculty.   As digital technology, population movements, and economic change bring us all closer together, the awareness of cultural differences is vital for success in today’s globalized marketplace, making the internationalization of college curricula more important than ever. Since Latin America continues to be a key area of national, economic, political, and cultural importance, exposing students to the languages, cultures, histories, and politics of the region will help become better informed global citizens and more competitive in the job and academic markets.

The purpose of the Faculty Curriculum Development Grants is to support the development of curriculum that brings issues related to Latin America into the classroom.  Awards of up to $2,000 can be used to pay for travel, the purchase of classroom materials (books, films, teaching collections) etc. (contact szremski@illinois.edu for questions about allowable expenses).  While this is envisioned as a curriculum development grant, funds may be used to support faculty research in special cases as long as the application articulates a clear argument as to how the proposed research will be brought into the classroom.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be full-time faculty at accredited post-secondary institutions
  • Preference given to applicants from Minority Serving Institutions and Community Colleges

Guidelines

To apply, please submit the following:

  • Coversheet: Please complete the attached cover sheet
  • Course Description/Syllabus: Please attached a brief course description or syllabus for the course(s) that will be impacted by this grant.
  • Project Narrative: (2 pages maximum) the narrative should clearly explain how the applicant intends to use the requested funds and how the activities undertaken during the grant period will be translated into the classroom.
  • Budget: the budget should include detailed breakdown of expenses (i.e. airfare, gas mileage, lodging, materials to be purchased, etc. – Please see note below as to which types of expenses are not allowable).
  • Application materials should be combined into a single PDF and submitted via email to szremski@illinois.edu.  Please include your last name and Curriculum Development Grant in the subject line.
  • Applications due February 28th

Successful applicants will be notified of their awards by March 15th and funds must be spent by August 14th, 2017.  Failure to use funds by this date may result in the loss of award. 

Grantees are also expected to write a brief post-report (1-2 pages) describing how activities undertaken during the grant period impacted their courses and are also asked to provide updated syllabi for impacted courses.
